GEOSS capacity building workshops, Bucharest, Romania, May 3-4, 2010

In the framework of the enviroGRIDS projects, two workshops are being organized in Bucharest in May.

1. BRINGING GEOSS SERVICES INTO PRACTICES (WORKSHOP 1)

Content: This workshops aims at teaching participants how to install, configure and deploy a set of open source software that allows them to publish and share their data and metadata through the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) using OGC web services & ISO standards. The workshop will cover interoperability, hands-on experience with web portals, information access, open source software and data sharing through web services and GEOSS registries.

Computer access with internet connexion will be provided to workshop participants. Participants with own laptops (Windows) are also welcome. All participants will receive a CD with all necessary open source software and data, user guides and relevant documentation on SDIs.

Registration: Deadline for registration is April 16th 2010. Every participant must register on the registration page for WORKSHOP 1. Registration is free of charge and open to technical experts and institutions in the Black Sea area that could benefit from an implementation of GEOSS. The workshop will be held in English.

Grant application: we can offer a grant of maximum 500 euro (limited to 10 applicants outside the enviroGRIDS consortium). To apply for a grant you have to fill in the application form, and send in a motivation letter and a short CV to the conference secretariat (international@soresma.be). For full consideration, grant applications are due April 12th.

2. GEOSS FOR DECISION MAKERS IN THE BLACK SEA AREA (WORKSHOP 2)

Date and venue: Tuesday, 4th of May 2010, 08h30 – 11h00, Aula of the Romanian Academy Library, Bucharest, Romania

Content: This workshop will provide a high level overview of GEOSS and data interoperability as they relate to the needs of senior government officials and decision makers in the Black Sea area.

Program: Four plenary speakers are scheduled:
- Dr. Anthony Lehmann (University of Geneva, enviroGRIDS project)
- Dr. Jay Pearlman (IEEE)
- Dr. Ion Nedelcu (Romanian Space Agency)
- Dr. Douglas Cripe (GEO Secretariat)

Registration: Deadline for registration is April 16th 2010. Every participant must register on the registration page for WORKSHOP 2. Registration is free of charge and open to everyone interested in the application of GEOSS in decision making. The workshop will be held in English.
